Scottish Development International
In an intensely competitive global environment, Scotland is punching well above its weight in securing jobs and economic benefit from around the world.
Scottish Development International (SDI) is the international arm of Scottish Enterprise, Scotland’s main economic development agency. Established in 2001, SDI is jointly operated by Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise and its work is guided by the Scottish Government’s strategy for economic development in Scotland.
From its Glasgow headquarters and network of 29 offices across North America, Brazil, Europe, the Middle East, West Africa and Asia Pacific, SDI’s team of experts draws together in-depth industry and market knowledge to help overseas businesses tap into Scotland’s key strengths in innovation, knowledge and technology and help Scottish companies to embrace and take advantage of the vast international trade opportunities on offer.
Inward investment has always played a significant role within Scotland’s economy, with Scotland being a profitable destination for business investment and premier location for research and development. Scotland now has more than 2,200 foreign-owned companies, employing approximately 303,000 people and generating a turnover of £100 billion. In the last decade, the number of foreign owned firms in Scotland has increased by 58%, with turnover increasing by an impressive 194%.
Indeed, Scotland has been ranked the top location in the UK outside London since 2007 in the EY Attractiveness Survey. Moreover, last year Scotland secured 33% of the total R&D projects into the UK, widely regarded as the most valuable type of investment.
Scotland is actively strengthening its international competitiveness, business environment, innovation capabilities and skilled workforce to cement the country’s position as the UK's top location of choice outside London for international investors.
SDI will continue to work with our partner agencies, exporters, investors and GlobalScots to promote Scotland as one of the most ambitious, innovative and successful countries in the world and an excellent location of choice to both live and work.
At present, Scotland has twelve mainland Chinese inward investors through a mix of direct investment, mergers and acquisitions, R&D partnering and joint venture business models. SDI has offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong so don’t hesitate to get in touch for more information or advice on setting up or investing in Scotland.
